Run any universe long enough and thermodynamics gets bored. Given enough time and enough empty space, random fluctuations in a high-entropy vacuum should — purely by chance — occasionally assemble a fully-formed, momentarily conscious brain, complete with false memories of a life it never lived. Cosmologists call these Boltzmann brains, and the unsettling part isn't that they might exist. It's that in most eternally-inflating models of the cosmos, they should vastly outnumber brains like yours, built the slow, expensive way through stars, planets, and evolution.
If a theory predicts you're overwhelmingly more likely to be a stray fluctuation than a real observer, something in the theory is probably broken — which is exactly why physicists keep this one filed under "informative failure" rather than "prediction." It's less a threat to reality and more a stress test for our models of it.

In 1977, a radio telescope listening for extraterrestrial hydrogen chatter caught 72 seconds of a narrowband signal 30 times louder than background noise, at almost exactly the frequency theorists said an alien broadcast should use. DIRECTION UNKNOWNKIC 8462852 dims irregularly and dramatically — by as much as 22% at a time, with no repeating pattern. It briefly became astronomy's most serious flirtation with the phrase "alien megastructure" before uneven clouds of dust took over as the leading, less thrilling explanation.
